INVESTIGATOR 563

Hi everyone,

Just bought an investigator few weeks ago and I am looking for an engine. From previous post i noticed that 5HP seemed to be the concesus on a good size. I was wandering if a 3.3HP Mercury would suffecient or not for the boat.

Do a search on the forum about motor sizes.

IMHO a 5hp will do the job and can be easily raised and lowered by hand.

However, I currently use a four year old Yamaha 8hp 2stroke. I use a couple of small blocks to raise and lower it. I use it because it is absolutely reliable and will hold hull speed in adverse conditions.

A 3 hp is too small IMHO. Sometimes when you want the motor - you want the motor.

5 horsepower is plenty ,but a 4 horsepower will probably also be sufficient . 3 horsepower will do in calm conditions but leaves nothing in reserve .

that's what i thought. Saw a 3.3HP at a good price and was tempted. It's hard to find a good 5HP at a reasonable price.

4/5HP are usually the same weight so would go for a 5hp.

Has anyone any view on 2 stroke or 4 stroke? 2 stroke are banned in Europe now.

2 strokes are still OK, I guess because we are mostly operating in tidal waters rather than lakes and rivers. If you were intending to do most of your sailing in fresh water then the environmentally kind thing would be to go for 4 stroke. However then you need to check the weight versus your back strength, as the 5 hp 4 stroke can be a bit heavy.

BTW, welcome on board! Please tell us the sail number of some details of your boat. Was it listed in our For Sale section? If it was, we would like to move it to the "Sold"section.

thanks everyone, just missed a bid on two stroke 5hp on ebay.
My boat was the one mentioned on your post, it was on ebay and one of your member inspected it. It was originaly moored in Williamstown and the previous owner brought it to Borona but never did any work on it. He has a MC gregor now.
I will keep all posted on the repairs, will need some advice to avoid any costly mistake.
The boat will be launch from Altona.

FYI: main 003, jib 148, and the boat numbers looks like EU932 but it's hard to tell.

One of the mainsails for that boat has a Blairgorwie Yacht Squadron b on it; you might find someone down there knows something about it's history?
