Re: A chat about VHF Radios

Apparently Marine rescue helicopters have DSC capable VHF, so they can get the exact coordinates as they approach the emergency area. Another plus for DSC VHF.

Re: A chat about VHF Radios

This Introduction video by GME helps understand their VHF radio range and some capabilities better, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_ORx0m0GLY&t=3s it helped me decide which handheld would suit me. Another factor, google AI helped with, was deciding if DSC/GPS capability was necessary or not. N...

Re: A chat about VHF Radios

Hi everyone. Being a bit of a fair weather sailor it has been a bit cold for me to get out on the water lately.... but the cold and rainy weather has been a good time to "tinker" with the setup on my Investigator. This week I have been tinkering with safety and I would like to hear what e...

Re: I563 is a stable and remarkable yacht!

20250914_102435.jpg Interesting topic Mark, I've experienced a bar crossing like that in Northern NSW, but it was on a 30ft keeler! I was the crew, but the skipper handled it like your Investigator..45 degree broach, 45 degree heel..then popped up on the plane, straightened and surfed in.! , that's...

Re: solar panels and charge controllers

Can you put two solar sources at once into the battery Andrew? That is if you have your fixed one connection active is there any issues with connecting the blanket at the same time to the same terminals. Curious relative to my motorhome. Blanket sounds good. And packs away small which is great. Gda...

Re: solar panels and charge controllers

Some specs on the Arlec 100W solar blanket. It's 42cm x 55cm folded up (so easily would stow in cabin) 127cm x 55cm deployed (should fit on side decks or bimini etc) Cells are efficient mono crystaline, about 23% (whatever that is..) It's maximum output should be about 5Amps in full sun. mppt contro...

Re: solar panels and charge controllers

Ozzie wrote."Solar blankets put out while they are on the jetty are becoming popular too as I assume they are getting cheaper and more efficient." Spotted a 100W solar blanket at Bunnys for $145, so grabbed it. It's made by Arlec very portable size when packed up and weighs 3.5kg all up. I...

Re: Stoves

Yes, the origos have beast-sized fuel tanks/burners! and it's a heavy, robust, zero rust mechzilla. But its still a compact size. The Bonetti spirit stove is a midget by comparison, however it is built heavily & robust and is all thick stainless like origo. (Might be good cabin heater too, stays...
