Love the African vibe - the Ayub Ogada 'kothbiro' for sailing I think.

Here's my fav Celtic sailing song 'seabird' (Whelan) ELeanor McEvoy

This wonderful Kite Cam video with Enya's Orinoco Flow does it for me . I also have a great instrumental album called Deep I picked up from the one of the musicians on it when I used to be part of the local music scene in LM. Its great background for sailing. I tend to only have music down low in the background when sailing if at all. I like the sounds of sailing as much as the view. As an ex muso I value silence these days ;) .

I relish sailing noises. We have just got back from a 9 day cruise from Sydney to New Caledonia, a guilty pleasure we only did 12 months ago but had to repeat. This time we took four friends. They all said they had a slight difficulty adjusting to the night time noises ( we were on deck 2 the lowest cabin deck with window cabins). Me , I slept like log every night lulled by the great noises against the side of the ship.

Oh yeah another song is "Everbody's Talkin' at Me" by Harry Nilsson. Closely associated with the movie Midnight Cowboy and used to bring to mind images of Dustin Hoffman limping around New York. After sat down one day and learned to play it it turns out to be about sailing. Works best at about 3 knots 8-)

Everybody's talking at me.
I don't hear a word they're saying,
Only the echoes of my mind.
People stopping staring,
I can't see their faces,
Only the shadows of their eyes.

I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Thru' the pouring rain,
Going where the weather suits my clothes,
Backing off of the North East wind,
Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone.

Never play music when sailing - I like the sound of the boat especially that gurgle under the stern.

When we stop then out comes boat guitar - a $90 3/4 sized guitar - which can be played for hours.

Peter, you got me thinking about a small guitar after this post rather than the old clunker I take out on the boat occasionally. Went on gumtree and picked up one of these secondhand for a  song (almost) with a little gig bag and not a scratch.

Has a full size neck but a very slim body , best played with a strap or resting on a pillow but can be played low on your knee. A fairly rigid top because of the small size so not much volume but thats not its purpose. It will be fine for a few blues and ballads on the mooring or round the fire when camped in the van. It needs a new set of strings so Im putting a set of ultralight acoustics on, which will quieten it down even more, but it wont annoy the neighbours in the mooring zone.

I think its a lesser copy of the Martin Packpacker , which is one of the better travel guitars available. Anyone interested, if you look online I imagine these come up occasionally.

That is one ugly looking guitar Ozzie. I suppose you could use it as a paddle or a porta potty aswell

Yeah,it wont win any prizes for good looks ..not its purpose. I was a bass player for 15 years and I cant strum anything with less than a full sized fret board.

The Martin backpacker is even weirder at 3 times the price.

 they will have to clear it with the wife first

Funny how most sailors I know also play some instrument or another, must go with the personality type.
