These days lawyers lie in wait to pounce, and manufacturers have to cover themselves by writing instructions for even the most stupid people who do not bother to look after themselves.

Now that I have that off my chest, it is interesting to read the risk assesment/minimisation strategy done by the Sun Maid Yacht Association. The Sunmaid is a bigger and heavier boat, but nevertheless it is very similar to the Investigator 563 and most observations would apply to our boats.

I am currently working through the RYA Day Skipper / Watch Keeper theory course and a big part of that is passage planning. All skippers are expected to have developed a passage plan prior to setting off. Like you, Ian, I think we have become a risk averse society and I can anticipate a time when something like the Sunmaid list will be required prior to us operating our boats.
