Re: Code Zero Spinnakers

Elsewhere I wrote a post about spending some time in the shed. On day 1 I worked on the code zero furler on Pip so I thought I should update this thread.

Call me Thunder (not as fast as Lightning) but it finally came to me in a flash of the bleeding obvious to swap my furlers so the big one handled the Code Zero (a bigger sail), and the small one handled the jib. I did this and was very pleased with the result.

Not only have I solved the furling problem, now the two furler units line up on the bow, one behind the other. They were offset before. The jib-furler is more inboard while the larger furler is positioned at the very front of the boat. When the code zero sail is hoisted it sits above the other furled.

Can't wait to try it out on the water.

Dr Peter
Could you supply us with some more info on your code zero spinnaker.
Specifically could you tell us how you measured for the size of it. Is there
a standard or ideal size for a code zero or is it at the discretion of the
sail maker and does that mean that they would all do it differently. Is
your code zero flown from the masthead or from a position just above
the forestay hound. Is the fullness of the sail a particular cut or does
the sail maker give you various options which I imagine might vary with
wind strengths or the angle you want to sail. Do you use your sail for both
upwind work or downwind as well. I would be interested if you could give
the leech luff and foot measurements and lastly are you still happy with
your sail and do you use it every chance you get. Were you tempted to
install a short bowsprit in order to clear all the guff at the bow getting the
sail in clear air making tacking and gybing easier.

Jeff,
I want to acknowledge your questions.

See this link:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=759&hilit=+continuous+line+furlers

It gives an insight into where I am now.

As for the other requests I will reply when I have a little more time to look up the information.

Measurements - Code Zero
A. Luff length from spinnaker hoist to bow fitting - 7.4m
B. Leech length from spinnaker hoist to aft most sheeting position - 7.48m
C. Foot length from bow fitting to aft most sheeting position - 4.6m
J. Length from bow fitting to mast - 2.3m
I. Length from side deck at mast to spin hoist - 7.2m

Eastwind Sails made the thing and worked out the dimensions.

This is the 563 FB page and there is video of use using the code zero upwind:

Upwind, the pointing is less than your headsail - obviously. Lots of tacking with the CZ is not much fun. However, a long board on a close reach is more than acceptable.

Downwind, a dowel pole is good for wing and wing in light stuff but sailing off the wind with the sails on the same side is better in heavier air 5+ knots.

I use what I believe is the standard position of the spinnaker halyard. Mine is not masthead.
