Stoves on board

Post by Mark »

All

Following on from the discussion of 'locker fuel fumes' where several mentions were made of types of stoves used in cooking on board I thought it useful to mention what I use on board for cooking as things seems to have moved on in this area..

I have two stoves; an Origo 1500 (http://www.seabreeze-industries.com.au/ ... 00-212.htm) which is a metho stove and used safely both in the cabin and cockpit. I find it great for 'slowish' cooking and heating up stuff, does the job as an all rounder but really set up for when you are moored or anchored. I store mine in one of the starboard lockers in the cabin under the mattress - it fits perfectly.

I have also purchased and used on numerous occasions a JETBOIL (http://www.anaconda.com.au/Brands/Jetbo ... vQodgbkAOQ). This has a small but well sealed butane canister and boils super water fast; for a cup of tea or coffee in under a minute. This is a great device and it is used by many sailors in boats of all sizes. For example with Aminee under auto-helm I have setup my JetBoil in the cockpit as I am sailing ( >5kts, heel 15 degrees) and made cups of tea in under 5 mins. All very safe, no fuss and easy. The JETBOIL has a range of features and cooking options and in many cases is the preferred choice for cooking quickly.

I believe this is a very safe option. I am following an amazing guy called Webb Chiles who is about to embark on his 6th and final circumnavigation from the USA, (he is 72) and has used the JETBOIL numerous times before on a boat not much bigger than our Investigators ( a Moore 24), I think it is a pretty good endorsement that he is trusting all his cooking needs for the next year on the seas with a JETBOIL (with Butane canisters) which are made in a safe way for such conditions.

Im also a fan of Webb Chiles Mark. For anyone who likes a good boating bedtime story his books are available here.

The first two about his earliest voyages are free in PDF format . I am reading Open Boat about his adventure in a Drascombe Lugger again right now on my ipad. No connection or commercial interest just a good nautical read.

I also have a podcast interview somewhere . May have been on "furled sails" the now defunct podcast still on iTunes

Cooked dinner with my Trangia methylated spirits camp stove on the forward end of the cockpit floor, seemed like a fairly safe place for it.

Relating to the other thread about fire safety, the 25L outboard petrol tank is stowed in the port quarter locker and kept the hatch closed while cooking.
