Check your towball

Post by Ozzie »

Just reading acaravan forum and came across this . I attach a bike carrier to my towbar every now and then and look at the ball then, but in years gone by I've not examined it much at all

Not unlike crevice corrosion in chain plates but could be more lethal.

Holy crap !!!
Will check mine straight away.
The thought of that happening towing my boat fully loaded along the three lane congested Pymble road North Sydney on my way to the Hawkesbury doesnt bear thinking about.
Thanks Ozzie
On the ball as usual

Yes Emrys. That's roughly what I said when I saw the article.

The thing that I wonder about is high load , high safety importance and widely available ( at cheap prices) imports coming into the country. I remember years ago when I first got into four wheel driving reading there were either hand winches ( which I had ) or maybe jacks that we're selling that did not meet Aus standards even though certified as such.

From memory it was mentioned on the other place that often such certification appearing on motoring gear is often self certification ie company provides certification to government that their product meets the standard. There is no independent check. I think I'll make my next tow ball Hayman Reece.

Not good for a winch when it breaks and you stay stuck in the mud, but even worse if a towball breaks and your boat's stuck in the front window of the local Maccas.

You wouldn't want fries with that
